Community Interview #35: Erin

Meet Erin! One of our 30 Day Sober challengers. She joined us last month for the live classes and last Spring Season for the Sober Girls Yoga on-demand classes. She was nice enough to participate in our blog interview. We appreciate the time you took to answer these questions. Enjoy…

How did you meet Alex?

Erin: I heard Alex on the Sober Stories podcast and loved hearing about her story!

What inspired you to start practicing yoga?

Erin: Meditation has been a huge part of my sobriety journey and I wanted to give yoga a try. I knew it's a helpful tool in the toolbox of many individuals on an alcohol free journey so I wanted to see if it would be helpful to me! Also, I love how my body feels after stretching out with yoga so I wanted to see those benefits on flexibility and mobility.

Have you ever had any experience with yoga before joining the MLPC?

Erin: Yes, I've done yoga classes on and off throughout my life but never consistently for a sustained time.

What’s your connection to the MLPC?

Erin: I joined Sober Girls Yoga earlier in spring 2022 and started with the on-demand classes. I really enjoyed those and love having them in my back pocket for on-demand yoga when it's convenient to me. Recently I have been joining more of the MLPC classes as I have been craving the personal connection that comes with them.

How did you end up being so committed to yoga?

Erin: I have been enjoying my journey so far and joining classes when I am able to! It's a nice supplement to support my mental and physical wellbeing.

Did you face any challenges during the month of June?

Erin: Definitely! Some personal challenges for myself and my long-term partner. It's been helpful to have the MLPC community as a support as I face my challenges head-on without numbing with alcohol.

What are the biggest benefits you’ve reaped from your yoga practice?

Erin: I enjoy the flexibility and mobility I get through yoga but I think the best is yet to come!

What’s your favorite posture?

Erin: Probably Child's Pose!

What’s your most difficult posture?

Erin: I struggle with postures involving me stretching my arms behind my back. I am hoping to improve my mobility in this way with the MLPC!

What is your favorite type(s) of yoga? And why?

Erin: I love Mindful Let Go (yin yoga)! I enjoy its relaxed nature and the long holds on some of the positions. It can be so restorative!

Any words of wisdom to those just starting out?

Erin: With trying everything new, you'll really benefit from getting curious, showing yourself grace and being open to new points of view. If someone is interested in examining their relationship with alcohol, I would encourage them to really lean into that. I dove headfirst into all the quit lit, podcasts, Facebook groups, and sobriety Instagrama when I was first beginning my journey of going alcohol free. Mindfulness and yoga can be great supports to tuning into your body and calming your nervous system, and it's fabulous that the MLPC combines that with opportunities to connect and build community. At more than a year sober I can tell you cutting out alcohol made my life considerably better. Life is still life, but I feel far more capable now to tackle it head-on. I feel a lot of peace with my life now and my baseline of anxiety is far lower than it was. If you think there could be a chance that your life would improve without alcohol, you owe it to yourself to explore that!
