All-Stars Interview #13: Laura

Meet Laura. A radio host show living in Abu Dhabi. She was one of those who started very early with the MLPC, back When Covid-19 hit and the world went into lockdown. Being an active person, Laura was looking to maintain her practice and saw the great opportunity Alex was offering when the MLPC started in March, 2020. Alex and Laura met at the studio where Alex used to teach yoga as a second job.

Laura likes to do gentle flow, mindful barre, yin yoga and vin & yin. Funny story: in one of our gentle flow classes she was on a lizard pose while an actual lizard popped up, something unusual in the city of Abu Dhabi, we hope that brought you good luck Laura. She has done the first 30 day challenge in April and loved it so much that she kept doing it in May, June, July, August and now September. A true All-Star of the MLPC.

I had the chance to ask Laura a few questions about her amazing/dedicated practice and thankfully she was a gem and answered the blog questions. So, here’s the All-Star and Hall of Famer answers...

Hi Laura! Tell us a little bit about yourself! Who is Laura?

Laura: Hi, I'm Laura! I'm from Preston in the UK and I'm a very proud northerner! I have lived in Abu Dhabi for the last three years and I love the UAE! I love the sunshine & the laid back life style. I'm a presenter and host the Breakfast Show on Radio 2 weekday mornings.

What inspired you to start practicing yoga?

Laura: At the beginning of lockdown I wanted to find a workout that I could do at home online every day. It was a very stressful time and yoga was the PERFECT cure!

Have you ever had any experience with yoga before joining the MLPC?

Laura: I'd done a couple of classes here and there but I wasn't massively into it. I didn't practice regularly. Maybe a couple of classes a month if that. Now I'm doing it every day thanks to the MLPC!

What’s your connection to the MLPC?

Laura: I went to a few of Alex's classes that she taught in a gym in Abu Dhabi before lockdown and I loved her instantly! I loved her style, personality and unique way of teaching. I remember at the end of one session I went up to her and told her she has an amazing aura/energy! I also asked her if she was a professional singer as she sings at the end of her classes!! (She still finds this hilarious)!! Then we connected on instagram and the rest is history!

How did you end up being so committed to yoga?

Laura: Without meaning to sound cheesy...yoga has completely changed my life. I could not imagine my life without it now! Working from home during the lockdown, going through a global pandemic and living alone whilst your family is on the other side of the world was so difficult and stressful....yoga saved me!! I remember being so stressed at the beginning of the classes I did back in March but by the end of each session I was like a different person....it helped me SO much! Yoga really is magical.

What are the biggest benefits you’ve reaped from your yoga practice?

Laura: Yoga has helped me to 'Live in the moment' and to 'Go with the flow'. I've always struggled to be 'Present' as I'm always looking to the future and my yoga practice has really made me appreciate what I have in my life right now, to be thankful for all the good things and to be grateful. I have also seen a big change in my body...I'm more toned and I've lost weight!

What’s your favorite posture?

Laura: Cat cow pose and sphinx.

What’s your most difficult posture?

Laura: Crow!

What is your favorite type(s) of yoga? And why?

Laura: I love vin & yin as it's a great mix! I also love gentle flow as I find that's really good for my mindset. Barre is a brilliant work out & I've just started doing the hatha classes too which I'm loving!

Any words of wisdom to those just starting out?

Laura: Sign up for a MLPC 30 day challenge! Everyone has an hour a day to spare....if you do 30 days in a row you will see a massive change in your mindset...and your body. You'll be like a different person! Also....anyone can do yoga!! It doesn't matter how old you are, whether you're male or female or what your fitness level or flexibility level is. Do it for one month and you'll see & feel the magic of yoga.
