ONLINE MEMBERSHIP : THE SUTRA COMMUNITY (SUTRA SANGHA)

Sangha means community in Sanskrit. The Sutra Sangha is your community for inner transformation through the ancient wisdom of Yoga.

ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY

sober girls yoga.webp

We started as Sober Girls Yoga in 2020.

Are you longing for deeper connection — to yourself, to your practice, and to a community that truly gets it?

Do you feel called to go beyond the surface of yoga — beyond just poses — and into the true heart of yoga philosophy?

You are not alone.

And you're exactly where you're meant to be.

The Sutra Community is a sacred online community (or sangha, in Sanskrit) where we gather weekly to explore, embody, and live the teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras — together. We were originally SOBER GIRLS YOGA in 2020 and we still have the same heart - a collection of women in recovery here to support eachother on our recovery journey. But now our name has evolved as we've grown and evolved. We're now more focused on the spirituality of recovery.

If you’ve ever wished you had a space to truly study, reflect, heal, and grow alongside others who are walking the same inner path... this is it.

About our June theme & practice schedule:

Alex writes about the theme & practice schedule on her Substack, so make sure you subscribe.  You can read her post about the June theme here, the Kleshas (causes of suffering). We will meet at 8:30am EST on Sundays, 7:30am EST on Mondays, and 8:30pm EST on Thursdays.

WHAT YOU GET

Each month, the Sutra Sangha focuses on a new theme from yoga philosophy, such as the vrittis (mental fluctuations) or mastering the abhyasa (practice) and vairagya (non-attachment).  Alex makes ancient wisdom modern and relatable to everyone.

Regular Live Gatherings

Alex will lead regular weekly live gatherings on Zoom. The gatherings will include meditation circles, discussions, and asana practices focused on the monthly theme. In June there are twelve practices (three a week). Each week, two are yoga practices and one is a meditation circle.

WhatsApp Community

The Sutra Sangha has a special WhatsApp group where the community can connect to share insights, reflections, and takeaways - which is only available to current members.

Recordings and Resources

Can’t make it live? No worries. You’ll receive access to the replays each month of the classes.

Additionally, you will get the large library of five years+ worth of yoga asana, meditation and pranayama classes with Alex!

WHY STUDY THE SUTRAS?
AND WHY NOW?

The Yoga Sutras aren’t just old philosophy.
They are a map for healing — for calming the mind, healing addictive patterns, recovering from trauma, and remembering your True Self.

In our modern, fast-paced world, the Yoga Sutras are more relevant than ever — offering timeless guidance to live with presence, clarity, and compassion.

By joining the Sutra Sangha, you’re not just learning concepts —
you’re living the practice, day by day, breath by breath.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

FAQ

What if I can't make the live calls?

All the calls are recorded and will be shared with members of the Sutra Sangha in the WhatsApp group.

Will you be teaching the yoga sutras in depth?

No. Alex leads a separate Yoga Sutra Study program which is a very popular one year course. You can join the Sutra Study here.

I'm new to yoga philosophy. Is this for me?

Absolutely. We welcome all levels — whether you're brand new or have been studying the Sutras for years. We explore complex ideas in a way that’s clear, welcoming, and grounded.

How much time do I need to commit each week?

Our live sessions are around 60–75 minutes weekly. You’re invited to participate at your own pace — whether that’s diving deep every week, or moving through the content slowly over time. You also get access to five years of recorded asana, pranayama and meditation classes on the archive at the bottom of this page with Alex so you can build a daily or weekly practice if you want to.

What makes the Sutra Sangha different?

This isn’t a pre-recorded course or surface-level study. It's an ongoing living practice community, blending ancient wisdom, modern recovery, mental health insights, and heartfelt connection. This is real. This is deep. And this is transformational.

What are the free classes listed on the schedule?

We run 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Trainings and invite our graduates to practice teach on the platform for us if they want to offer free classes. These are in service to the community and totally free of charge.

Sober Girls Yoga Classes are different from a regular yoga class in that they begin with a fifteen minute check-in, giving each person a chance to pick up a “talking stick” and share how they’re doing. The check-in is a judgement free zone, where we listen with compassionate curiosity and avoid interruptions and giving advice. This creates a sense of belonging, where everyone feels included and accepted, wherever they are on their journey. After the check-in, we will transition into our practice. The first half of Sober Flow and Let Go is a more dynamic vinyasa inspired sequence of postures with the objective of building heat and moving energy. The second half is focused on yin or restorative postures: an introspective practice in stillness and patience. We will hold seated and supine yin or restorative postures for a long duration of time, getting a deep stretch for the tissues and releasing tension from the body. This practice balances the yin and the yang and you’ll leave here feeling centered. If you enjoyed this class, please make sure to subscribe to our channel, and also check out our other offerings. If you join this class live on Zoom you can be part of a Sober Women's Circle before the class begins, a sacred space for everyone to share, which is nonjudgemental, advice & interruption free. Inspired by the fitness of Barre and the atmosphere of a Bar! After a yoga-inspired warm-up, we will move into power mode - toning and strengthening the body with functional movement exercises set to upbeat music. Depending on the theme, there may be a yoga flow interlude or a cardio burst, with low impact options offered. We'll seamlessly transition into a powerful core section, and then a mindful stretch at the end. You'll leave having strengthened and stretched your body, and centered your mind. A chair or countertop in place of a Barre is highly recommended for balance and support. Light weights are optional but encouraged, and you may also like to have yoga blocks handy. -- If you enjoyed this class, please make sure to subscribe to our channel, and also check out our other offerings.
